Although I don't follow a procedure or a script when I'm painting, my base layer is often followed by a second layer in one color. Similar as in a screen printing process, I'm adding layers. The second color and the third color are normally very dark and very light. This is how I simplify my image: I'm reducing and limiting the range of tones.
